High in the Japanese Rockies, Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort delivers Japanese POW at its purest. As Japan’s largest and highest ski destination, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve boasts 18 interconnected ski areas, championship runs, and one of the country’s longest seasons – from late November to late May. From family-friendly cruisers to off-piste powder zones, it’s a vast winter playground where the snow stays light, the sends stay big, and the views stretch to Mt. Fuji.

SNOW MONKEYS IN THE STEAM

Just 30 minutes away, Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park offers the rare sight of wild snow monkeys soaking in natural hot springs, framed by snowy forests.

POWDER THAT LASTS

With its high elevation and inland climate, Shiga Kogen boasts world-class powder—incredibly light, dry, and fluffy. Every turn here feels like gliding on air, delivering an experience unlike anything on ordinary groomed runs. On storm days, head for Terakoya or Yakebitaiyama powder zones, where sheltered slopes keep the snow deep and untouched.

LEGACY IN THE LIMELIGHT

Home to the 1998 Nagano Winter games, including the legendary Higashidateyama Course and Yakebitaiyama’s “platinum powder” runs.

LOCAL HACK

Most areas are connected by lifts and gondolas, and shuttle buses are available when needed. Free shuttle buses link all 18 ski areas, making it easy to explore the whole resort without ever removing your boots.
